A two-day Maritime History Seminar is underway at the INHS Asvini Auditorium on 01 and 02 Nov. This is the 32nd annual seminar being organized by the Maritime History Society (MHS) since its inception in 1978. This seminar focuses on the theme 'Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) – Past Aberrations, Present Predicaments, Future Implications'. Vice Admiral DK Joshi, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command and Chairman, MHS delivered the inaugural address. Former Chief of Naval Staff Admiral (Retd) Arun Prakash delivered the keynote Address. In his Keynote address, Adm Arun Prakash highlighted various issues pertaining to the Freedom of the Seas.
A book on 'Maritime Heritage of Lakshadweep and Minicoy', by Prof B Arunachalam was released by Vice Admiral DK Joshi, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command. This is the 14th book in the series. Prof Arunachalam is a reputed academician who retired as Professor and Head of Department of Geography at the University of Mumbai in 1993.
Eight papers are being presented during the seminar on issues related to the EEZ namely UNCLOS and Associated Regulations, Maritime Boundaries/ Areas of Confrontation in the IOR with Special Reference to India, Security Considerations of Offshore Oil Assets on Western and Eastern Seaboard of India, Recent Trends in piracy in the EEZ / International Waters, Mapping, Survey and Hydrodynamics of our EEZ, Marine pollution, Living Marine Resources and Seabed Mapping / Mining. Prominent Historians and Academicians besides naval officers participated in the seminar, Prof B Arunachalam, Admiral (Retd) JG Nadkani, Admiral (Retd) Vishnu Bhagawat, Vice Admiral (Retd) MP Awati Chaired and moderated some of the sessions. Commander (Retd) Mohan Narayan, Curator MHS, welcomed the gathering.
